Jobs at the Mount Washington Cog Railway are always needed. The reason for this is because during the summer it is our busiest season. We need at least 5 crews during this season. Considerating that there are three personnel per crew, this is a lot of positions to fill. Even though you need to go through a lot of train to become a fireman and engineer, you can get a job as a brakeman. Brakeman are always needed. If new brakeman are hired, the existing brakeman can move up to the fireman position with training. To become a brakeman, you need to learn with a qualified brakeman for at least 30 trips. The brakeman teaches you the ropes and rules of the mountain and the safety of the people. Once the crew and trainmaster thinks your ready, you will take a written test and an actual qualifying run with the trainmaster. Then to become a fireman you also need to pass a written test, and you are basically the engineer's assistant. Once you are qualified as a fireman, you are always learning how to become an engineer.
