The Mount Washington Cog Railway is a three-hour train ride to the top of Mount Washington. The view of the mountain is spactacular as you climb 6, 288 feet to the summit. On your way up, the train stops at three switches and gets 1, 000 gallons of water and one ton of coal. The Mount Washington Cog Railway was founded in 1866 and has been in Existence since 1869. This year is the 136th year that the Cog Railway has been open. The Cog Railway was built just for the purpose of transportation up the mountain for tourism. The man who started it all was Slyvester Marsh. Everybody said that it could never be done and Yet, here it is today, three miles of Railroad Track and a mountain climbing train. (History Page)
Before you go up on the train, you can eat in the cafeteria, look around and learn about the Cog's History in the museum, and get fabulous souvenirs in the gift shop. As you and your passengers go up Mount Washington, your brakeman will guide you and tell you about the Cog Railway and other facts. When you get to the top, you have twenty minutes to visit the musuem, cafeteria, gift shop, and other exhibits. The brakeman will let you know when it's time to go again. If you want to stay longer you may, but you are only guaranteed a seat on the train you go up on, if the train you want to come down is full, you will have to stand or wait untill the next train comes. On the way down, the brakeman will be at the back of the coach, at the brakewheels braking and keeping a the same speed as the engine.
